Why Should You Go Greek?

The benefits to going Greek at Maryland are endless! Sorority women here are some of the most involved, intelligent, motivated and interesting women on campus. Here are just a few of the reasons why you should consider going Greek:

Scholarship: Sorority women at the University of Maryland campus have a higher average GPA than non-Greek women. In fact, one in ten Greeks has a 4.0 GPA! Scholarship and achievement is very important to us. Those who achieve academic success are rewarded and recognized in their own chapters and by the entire Greek community. Also, chapters provide academic support to their members on a consistent basis.

Service: All chapters have individual philanthropies that they are very involved with. Chapters hold fun annual events that raise money for their philanthropies, and the entire Greek system comes to support these events. There are also Greek-wide community service projects that take place all-year round, such as campus beautification projects, food drives during Homecoming and Greek Week, tutoring for area schools, Trick-or-Treat on Greek Street, and Relay for Life, just to name a few.

Social: The Greek system at Maryland provides a broad range of fun social events for chapter members to participate in. Every year, Greeks participate in Homecoming in the fall and Greek Week in the spring. These week-long events create opportunities to meet people in other chapters through competition events, socials, and mixers. Individual chapters also hold events throughout the year within their own chapters, like formals and dated parties, and with other chapters, like themed mixers and ice cream socials.

Leadership: The Greek community at Maryland offers numerous leadership opportunities. Each individual sorority has their own executive board and there is also an executive board that presides over all fourteen PHA chapters. In addition to that, there are opportunities to get involved with the Greek Judicial system, Homecoming and Greek Week, Order of Omega (the Greek honor society) and athletics. Outside of Greek life, Greek women also hold leadership positions on campus, in organizations such as Maryland Images, Omicron Delta Kappa and other honor societies, and the University Student Judiciary, among others.

Sisterhood: Most importantly, sororities offer life-long friendships. Whether you need someone to laugh with or a shoulder to cry on, someone will always be there for you. Even after graduation, chapters offer alumni networks nationwide, which provide invaluable resources for finding careers
