Service is an extremely important tenet of sorority life. Sororities at the University of Maryland consistently participate in service activities to benefit our university and local communities. In the Fall 2009 semester, every sorority collected bags of toys and donated them to underprivileged children through an organization called, “From Our Hearts to Yours.” In the Spring 2010 semester, several sororities participated in UMD’s first annual Dance Marathon, as well as Relay for Life. Individual chapters also participate in their own community service activities such as trail clean-ups, tutoring for area schools, and making care packages for U.S. soldiers.
All Panhellenic Association chapters have a philanthropy that they are connected to on a national level, and also have other organizations they donate money to. In order to raise awareness and funds for these organizations, each chapter holds philanthropy events. The entire Greek community as well as the university community comes to support these events. All of these events are a great way to have fun while still doing something great for a non-profit organization. Some philanthropy events that sororities hold at UMD include Alpha Phi’s “Red Dress Gala” on behalf of the Alpha Phi Foundation for heart disease, Zeta Tau Alpha’s “Think Pink Carnival” on behalf of the Susan G. Komen, and Sigma Delta Tau’s “∑∆T Your Way Through College Park” on behalf of Prevent Child Abuse America.
"My sorority’s national philanthropy is the National Kidney Foundation. This is an important cause to me because it is something that affects many people. At our national leadership conference, we learned about the need for organ donors. This inspired my sorority to spread the word and continue to raise money for the foundation in order to save lives."

“Our favorite service event is the annual Vision Walk, which supports our sorority’s national philanthropy, Service for Sight. Many members of DG participate in the event each year both as walkers and volunteers. It’s great to be able to experience this event and become closer with fellow sorority sisters while also doing a great thing for the community.”
