Hello all!
I’m so excited to be the Head Rho Gamma coordinator for 2012 recruitment. PHA recruitment at Maryland is great. I’ve been through recruitment a bunch of times, from a Potential New Member’s perspective (I joined my chapter in Fall 2008!), from a Sorority member perspective and from a Rho Gamma’s perspective. All of them have been amazing, but last year, which was my first year being a Rho Gamma, was definitely my favorite. It was so fantastic being on the other side of recruitment. I loved helping the Potential New Members go through the experience, answer their questions, and provide an unbiased perspective on Maryland Greek life. While I definitely missed being with my chapter during recruitment parties and events, guiding Potential New Members through the experience was so fulfilling and fun. Being a Rho Gamma is such a wonderful opportunity; you get amazing leadership experience, you’re contributing immensely to Maryland Greek life, you’re helping Potential New Members find their future best friends and you make great friends with the other Rho Gammas. I highly recommend chapter members to apply!
I’m so excited for this recruitment!
Cheers!

A Rho Gamma is an impartial representative of the Panhellenic Association who guides Potential New Members (PNMs) through the formal recruitment process.
What does a Rho Gammas do?
A Rho Gamma creates an enjoyable and memorable recruitment experience for PNMs, she maintains a positive attitude toward the Greek community through her own actions and attitudes, and she encourages women to stay in recruitment. A Rho Gamma remains disaffiliated from her chapter to provide an unbiased opinion of the Greek community, she stops any rumors that could affect PNMs, and she needs to be available to PNMs at all times to answer questions and provide guidance. A Rho Gamma also needs to be compassionate, understanding, and patient while PNMs make the difficult decisions of the recruitment process as well as learn the rules and regulations of formal recruitment to ensure that chapters as well as PNMs are abiding by them.
What’s the time commitment for a Rho Gamma like?
Rho Gammas need to attend a weekly (unregistered) Rho Gamma class starting Wednesday, October 19th 8:30-10 pm as well as attend the Rho Gamma Retreat in January 2012 (prior to the first day of the spring semester). During recruitment Rho Gammas need to attend Kick Off, all rounds and parties, and stay late as necessary to help the PNMs--this time commitment during recruitment equals the amount of time chapter members put into parties and recruitment practice.
Do I have to disaffiliate from my chapter to be a Rho Gamma?
Yes, Rho Gammas are required to disaffiliate from their chapters from the first Rho Gamma class to the end of recruitment.
What does it mean to disaffiliate from your chapter as a Rho Gamma?
When a Rho Gamma disaffiliates she cannot wear clothing with her chapter’s name or letters on it, or any other apparel promoting her chapter. She also must make herself extremely private on Facebook and other social networking sites so that curious PNMs cannot do a Google or Facebook search and discover what chapter she’s in. Rho Gammas cannot promote their chapter at Greek life events. Rho Gammas can still live in their chapter houses and still hang out with their sisters, they just need to be careful that what chapter she’s in isn’t obvious to an onlooker.
